About Bharatnatyam & Kuchipudi

Bharatnatyam is a pure classical dance form that originated in Tamil Nadu, India. This dance form can be traced back to before 2BC and there are many theories on the origin of Bharatnatyam. One theory is that the dance form is named after its creator ‘Bharata’. Another theory claims that Bharata Natyam is an acronym of Bhavam- Expression/ feel , Ragam- Music/ Melody, Talam- beat/ Rhythm, signifying that it combines melody, rhythm and drama. 'Natyam' means 'dance'.

During the medieval period, which ranged from 2 BC through 9 AD, Bharatnatyam went through many changes. This era could have marked the downfall of this pure art form. It took turns that was not comprehended and lost its authenticity. There are references about dancing from Buddhist Stupas, Ellora Caves and temples in various part of India. The temples contain sculptures of dancers of different art forms.

In the next well documented period the first half of the 19th century - the dance tradition was revitalized and redefined to honor its original form. In 1930, Kalakshetra Academy, founded by Rukmini Devi Arundale, started a renaissance for Bharatnatyam, reviving its purity and authenticity, which had been lost over the previous several years.
